Dundee Scouts will hit the stage with a bang in April 2012 with a mix of Comedy, Dance and Song. The cast of over 100 members of Dundee Scouting will sing and dance their way through a true variety of numbers guaranteed to have you dancing and singing in your seat!

The 2012 Show will be produced by Ged Brown, with music provided by Paul Clancy and choreography by Lesley McMahon.

Tickets, priced from £8.50 upwards will be available from January and the Show will take place in The Whitehall Theatre, Bellfield Street, Dundee.

This 2 day intensice course will give you a Certificate valid for three years and is aimed at members requiring First Aid training to support NGB qualifications.

The course fees of £130 include 2 nights' accommodation, food and all course materials.

The course is suitable for: outdoor activity enthusiasts and professionals and is acceptable for all National Governing Body Awards and qualifications such as: MLTB, BASI, MBL, TCL, RYA, BCU and other sports.
Revalidation can be undertaken every 3 years by attending course again.

Scout Speak up – is a course that trains you to ‘Tell the world about Scouting’

· this course is designed to give you the skills and confidence to talk about your experiences to a wide variety of audiences and teach you how to carry out campaigns.

· it’s aimed at youth members aged 15-19,

• Giving radio interviews
• Delivering presentations
• Supporting a campaign
• Online campaigns/direct lobbying

Skills for Life

· These skills will be useful for the rest of your life and will look great on a CV - you’ll get real media and promotional experience on your CV!

· And of course, you’ll enjoy a fun-filled weekend with other Scouts your age.

Be Part of Future Campaigns

· You’ll be put in contact with your Region’s ARC Communications (that’s me) who will proactively work with you to make the most of your newfound skills.

· You will also be contacted by Scottish Headquarters from time to time when they need young people to speak to the media for them.

· You’ll be invited to join a group who will work on ideas for promoting scouting – you’ll get involved in the brainstorming of ideas and the execution of these ideas as future campaigns.

Camp details and cost

· The course, including overnight accommodation and food, is free

· You will need to pay your own travelling expenses to and from Fordell Firs – however there may be money available from region if there are problems with this costs.

· Some participants will camp; others will stay in indoor accommodation.

· Full pre-course information will be distributed prior to the events.

Satellite Camp 2012

Satellite Camp 2012
The Satellite Camp for Blair Atholl is held in an adjacent field to the Main Camp.
The purpose of the Satellite Camp at Blair Atholl is to enable Scottish "Scouts" to get a short taste of International Scouting at the Jamborette.
The Satellite Camp Programme is aimed primarily at members of the Scout Section and Patrols or Troops are welcome.
Explorer Scout Units are also welcome.
It is regretted that Beavers or Cub Scouts cannot be accepted as participants.
Younger children of Leaders attending may be brought at the discretion of the Satellite Sub Camp team.

The Satellite Camp opens from noon on Friday 20th July and closes at noon on Monday 23rd July.

EUROCAMP 2012

We have been invited to attend an international Scout Camp to be held this year in Belguim. The camp is run every 10 years by Scouts Sint-Victor. Below is some information about the camp, this has been copied from their website http://www.eurocamp2012.be.

What is EuroCamp?

EuroCamp is an international camp organised by Scouts Sint-Victor. Born as the result of former international contacts, this event is organised every ten years and has reached its third edition. The unique experience of many different scouts and cultures together is the reason EuroCamp is organised yet again and we would love to share this experience with other scouts in Europe.

Our goal is to bring together 200 youngsters between 15 and 17 years old. Because these young scouts are still underaged, we require they are accompanied by a few adults. We do not expect you to prepare any activities.

When and where?

When: EuroCamp will take place between 1 and 10 august 2012.
Where: The location is "de Hoge Rielen" in Kasterlee, Belgium. A sneek preview of the location is available here.

What do you do at EuroCamp?

We try to offer a varied set of activities:

 Traditional scouting activities:

 outside fun activities

 two day hiking trip

 camp fire

 Experiencing the Belgian culture

 Visit to a theme park

 Visit a cultural city

 Make new friendships

Rosyth District would very much like to take a contingent of Explorer Scouts to this camp. We feel that all Explorers attending would gain a great deal from the camp, both in terms of meeting people from other countries, experiencing an international Scouting event and most importantly having some fun.

We expect the cost of the camp to be a maximum of £375 which will include travel, accommodation, food and insurance. We aim to keep the cost as low as possible, but this will depend upon the numbers attending and discounts we can obtain for transport.

If your child would like to take part can you please let me know before the end of January by emailing me on paul@thefield.plus.com. Please include your child’s name, Unit and contact details in any email. Once I have numbers in I will be in touch with more details and to request a £40 deposit to secure their space at the camp. The deposit will need to be paid by the middle of February.

Carol Service

On Wednesday 14th Dec,

It was our district's Carol service,

It was hosted by Aberdour.

After some moving around as the original venue had been doubled book we finally held it in the local Primary school.

Our district minister took the service in which we sang a few carols and had a very interesting sermon.

We finished off the evening to a very load version of Rudolf the red nosed reindeer.

The collection we took was for the Fife Gingerbread charity and we raised £85.00 on the night.

Five a Side Football

Over two Sundays in November,

The district ran its five a side football compertition.

The Cubs had 4 packs taken part in a league format.

The results were as follows.

4th - 13th Rosyth
3rd - 41st Rosyth
2nd - 68th Inverkeithing
Winners - 48th Dalgety Bay

The Explorers only had one unit take part - 13th Rosyth

The following week it was the scouts turn.

We had 5 Troops turn up and after a well fought afternoon the results were as follows.

5th - 48th Dalgety Bay (Donibristle troop)

4th - 41st Rosyth

3td - 66th Aberdour

2nd - 13th Rosyth

Winners - 68th Inverkeithing

Important Course Dates for Leaders

Dunfermline District has kindly offered the district places on there course over the coming weeks.

They are as follows

Courses this Month

Saturday 26th November - Modules 5-9 - These are required by all Leaders. Course being held in Forfar, but transport will be provided from Dunfermline.

Tuesday 29th November - Module 1 (Getting Started) and Module A of Young Leader Scheme - 7pm - 9pm at Cairneyhill School. This is essential before Young Leaders start helping and should be done as soon as an adult starts helping in a Section.

Saturday 3rd December - First Response Module 10 - will be held at St Leonards Church Hall starting at 10am. Those just requiring a refresher will finish at 12.30pm, those needing a full course by around 3pm.

Tuesday 6th December - Safeguarding Awareness - 7pm - 9pm at Cairneyhill School. This course is compulsory before an appointment can be renewed and must be undertaken every five years. There are many leaders in Dunfermline who must attend or there appointment will be cancelled.

Dark nights

With the clocks going back it is time to reflect on what has happened over the past few months.
I have visited some groups while they were on camp of one sort or another.
They were the 48^th cubs at their mother and cub camp and also at their cycle camp

I attended the active support meeting in which finally Peter Merckel got presented with the right long service award (20 years)

I attended the District Beavers 25^th birthday party where they had several activities to take part in(from a treasure hunt at a giant pass the parcel)

They also had a giant birthday cake to celebrate the event.

Two beavers got their Chief scout bronze award presented and I also presented Gary Dewar with his 15 year service award

I visited the 77^th Kelty when they were up at Fordell Firs doing some climbing they also invested 10 cubs that have just moved up from beavers.

The following night I attended their AGM.

I visited the 66^th Aberdour scout troop in which Adam Shepherd had his chief scout award gold presented.

I have held a GSL/ADC meeting and also a district leaders meeting.

With the dark night snow upon us I don’t think it will stop what we do best and that is to deliver scouting in Rosyth.

Shoe Box Appeal

25th Birthday Party

On Saturday 17th September,
The Beaver Colonies got together to celebrate their 25th Birthday.

7 of the 8 Colonies from the district attended and we had 75 Beavers in total,

The afternoon started with a giant scavenger hunt round Fordell Firs.
After this we play a giant pass the beaver instead a parcel and played musical statues.

The beavers had the opportunity of going to the shop to buy some fordell gifts.

They then had some food and everyone sang Happy Birthday to us as two large cakes were brought in.

During the day some Bronze awards were handed out and 2 Beavers were invested.

To finish off the day Gary Dewar (ADC Beavers was presented with his 15 year service award.

With Scouting for most starting to wind down for the summer holidays.

I have still be busy with district activities.

This is what I have been up to over the past few months.

I have visited the following groups on camp.

4 beaver colonies while at their sleep over at Fordell.

(13^{th, 41st , 68th and 77th)}

^{also the 13th Cubs, 13th Scouts and the 41st Cubs at Fordell.

I have visited the 68th Beavers and cubs at their hall.

And on one sunny evening I visited the 13th Scouts,Explorers and the 41st Scouts when they were out enjoying the weather.

I attended the 48th agm where I presented 4 Chief Scout Gold awards.

I also attended the 66th agm and the regional agm as well.

I have presented some long service awards out to the following people.

Elaine Pert(48th) – 40 year service

Lee Symms (Disrtict Chairman) – 15 year

Isobel Lloyd (Active Support) – 5 Year

I also invested Louise Taylor and Iain Stevenson both from the 48th Dalgety Bay

I visited the active support at their BBQ and also helped them at the Dunfermline ½ Marathon.

We had a couple of District Events.

1st we had our sports day.

Congratulations to all that took part.

2nd We had our Scouts Totem trophy.

Well done to the 68th for winning and good luck in the regional weekend.

To finish off I hope that every one has a great summer and come back refreshed for a new session.}

Regional Camping Zone

Over the weekend 18th - 19th June,
Our Totem winners (68th Inverkeithing) went to pit their wits against other Patrols from Scotland in one of the regional zone competition.

Ours was held at Fordell.
There were 6 other patrols taking part and here is our patrol scored out of 1000 points on offer.

Totem Camping Competition

Over the weekend 14th - 15th May.
6 troops from the district took part in the camping competition held at Fordell Firs.
The weekend tested the scouts in camping skills.
This ranged from setting up a site to cooking skills.
They had 6 bases in which they worked through during the weekend.

After all this we had a winning patrol from the 68th Inverkeithing that will go forward to represent the district at the regional camping competition in June.

Sports Day

On Saturday 7th May, It was our district sports day.
It was held at Pitreavie Playing Fields just outside Dunfermline.
We had events for all the sections.

In the morning we had field events for the Cubs/Scouts and Explorer Scouts.

This was followed by the Beaver Scouts Sports day.
They took part in 10 events.
The overall winners were the 48th St Bridget colony,Who had not won the trophy for 21 years.

After they had finished it was time for the rest of the sections to take part in the track events.

The results were as follows.

DC Diary

With Spring now upon us.
More and more of the sections are now starting to venture outdoors to do activities.

I have been busy over the past 2 months.
Here is what I have been up to.

I started off March with Investing Callum Robertson from the 48th Beavers.

I had a meeting with Alex Duncan (Regional Commissioner) at Fordell Firs to discuss the way forward for the District.

The main highlight during March was our district leaders skill weekend which was held at Fordell Firs.
The purpose of the weekend was for leaders to learn new skills or develop old ones.
We had 50 leaders attend the weekend and the feedback has been positive and that the leaders would like to hold a similar event in the future.

During the social night at the weekend several training certificates and revised warrants were handed out.
Also Douglas Knight and Iain Cusator were presented with their 5 year service award and Darrian Wilson received his 20 year award.

I went and help the inch active support unit pack the Scottish pathfinder up at Fordell Firs.

I have attended several meetings – District Exec, District Active support and a Regional DC meeting held in Glenrothes.

I assisted SHQ in running a ESL(YL) course in Aberfeldy.

The beavers held their Challenge day competition held at Inverkeithing high school in which 6 colonies attended.
Well done to all that took part and congratulations to the 48th Donibristle for winning the cup.

I attended the Rosyth explorer scouts gang show where Jaqueline Dewar and Catt Robertson were invested on stage.

I attended a scouts leaders meeting to arrange the forth coming totem competition.
We also held a sport day committee meeting to arrange the district sports day.

I visited the 77th during their week camp at Fordell Firs.

The big camping weekend in April was our St George’s camp.
We had 207 members attend during the weekend.
During the weekend we had a renewal of promise service which was followed by a camp fire.
During the service I presented 3 wood badges to leaders from the 77th Kelty.
Congratulations to all.

Lastly I attended a course to learn about trusties and their roles.
This was run by SHQ and was held at the King Malcolm hotel in Dunfermline.

Kilbryde Challenge hike

The Boys Brigade run a hiking compertition every year.
It is called the Kilbryde HIke.

About the Hike

The Hike is for young people in teams of 3. They can be boys, girls or mixed with separate tents.
This year’s hike will cover 25-35 miles over the weekend, finishing with a meal and prize giving on the Sunday afternoon.
The young people will require to be proficient in map reading and be fit enough to cover the distance on open moor.
Teams are required to be self-sufficient and carry all equipment necessary for their
safety.
A kit list will be supplied on entry.
The Expedition teams carry a reduced kit with larger items transported to the Camp Site.
If properly registered the Hike meets the requirements of the Duke of
Edinburgh Award at Bronze Level.

This is a challenge which tests the navigation and endurance skills and is greatly rewarding.

District Camp

Over the weekend 22nd to 24th April the district held it's St George's Day weekend camp.
It was held at Fordell Firs.
Over 120 Cubs/Scouts/Explorers and Leaders spent the weekend together.
They had lots of activities to do over the weekend.
Some of them are as follows.

Challenge course
Bungee trampoline
Pioneering
Fire Lighting
Backwoods cooking
Climbing
Archery
Hikes
and a trip to the Stock Cars.
this is to name but a few.

On the Saturday the Beavers from the district joined us for the day and seen a camp in full flow.
On the Saturday afternoon we held our service and renewed our promises.
This was followed by a camp fire which had to be held indoors due to the weather.

There were some awards handed out during the service.

Shark Named

In the February edition of Programme e-News, The Scout Association and Deep Sea World in North Queensferry launched a competition to suggest a name for the latest addition to the deep water aquarium; a Sand Tiger Shark being received from Dingle in Republic of Ireland.

We were overwhelmed by the number of names suggested by Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts across Scotland for the new Sand Tiger Shark and have now had the opportunity to review them all, consider the reasons for the name and to make a decision.

The newest addition to the aquarium at Deep Sea World will be called...‘Scout’!
Despite it seeming an obvious choice, the name ‘Scout’ will be recognisable instantly to both members of the association and to the general public alike and as a verb, happily describes a major characteristic or behaviour of the shark as the name ‘Sand Tiger’ comes from their tendency to ‘scout’ around shoreline habitats, often seen trolling the ocean floor in the surf zone, very close to shore.

The name was suggested by Ewan Penman, a Cub Scout at 1st Burntisland (11th Fife) Scout Group and he and his Pack will be amongst the first to meet the latest member of the association!

For everybody else; Deep Sea World has offered two exclusive opportunities to meet the Sand Tiger Shark.

The first is A Jawsome Night Out on Friday 20th May 2011 open to all members of The Scout Association and the second is for Cub Scout Packs to have a Pack Day Out and get behind the scenes to complete the Animal Carer or Global Conservation Activity Badges.

Unfortunately BBC’s The One Show were not able to film the release of the Sand Tiger Shark on 17th March due to other priorities; however we still hope to see some press releases and good publicity once Ewan and the rest of his Cub Scout Pack have visited Deep Sea World.

Anne Weatherstone Beaver Challenge Cup

On Sunday 27th March the beavers all headed to Inverkiething high school to take part in their challenge day.

We had 7 colonies taking part.
They had to go round several bases.

They were as follows.
Clothes Peg challenge
Stilt walking
Beat the buzzer challenge

Running
Hockey dribble
Beat the goalie

After all the fun and games and when the scores were all added up it was the 48th Donibristle colony that came out on top
But every one was a winner as every beaver received a badge from Akela's Den

BASP 2 Day Emergency First Aid Course

This is a two day emergency First Aid course, being held at Meggernie Outdoor Centre on 25th - 27th November.

The cost for the course is £130 for members of The Scout Association (£150+VAT for non-members), which includes two nights’ accommodation, food, course fees and materials.

The course is suitable for outdoor workers, instructors and enthusiasts, and a certificate, valid for 3 years and recognised by MLTB, BASI, BCU and other NGBs will be gained.

Saturday 21st May or Saturday 25th May in Dundee.

This course is for all GSL's and anyone interested in being a training adviser.

Module 38 - Greenfield course - we are looking for potential numbers and if this is required before or after summer.
Module 38, Skills for Residential Experiences will be a weekend training course run as a practical camping weekend. The module will reflect the skills needed for a Nights Away Permit and is a specialist module which will not be mandatory for any section leader's wood badges. The module is highly recommended for any leader who does not have a nights away permit but who may wish to work towards applying for one. Module 38 will cover Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer Scout sections nights away opportunities.

Now that are passed the worst of the winter weather(Hopefully)
I have been kept busy with different things.
Here is what i have been up to since the turn off the year.

I attended the District Exec which was held at the 68th Inverkeithing Scout hall.

I also attended the Inch Active Support meeting which was held in Crossgates
I attended the Young Leaders Training Weekend at Tannadice which is between Dundee and Aberdeen.
I facitlited one of the training modules that were on offer to the Young Leaders.

I Visited the 66th Aberdour Exec to discuss the way forward for the Scout Group

I have the privillage of presenting the following awards over the past couple of months.

Skills Weekend

Over the weekend of 5th & 6th March 2011,
Rosyth District held a LEADERS ONLY and SKILLS BASED training weekend at Fordell Firs National Activity Centre.
The event started at 12pm and the leaders were invited to arrive from 11am to register and set up camp.
The leaders had a wide range of skills to learn
The skills on offer were as follows

There was also the opportunity for a social evening on the Saturday and to try and learn how to operate a few of Fordell’s own activities on the Sunday;
all of which was designed to bring the District’s leadership closer together and to increase opportunities for our young people.

On Tuesday 1st march 4 Troops turn up to take part in the Woolmer Competition.
This was held at Fordell Firs and run by the Fordell Active Support.

The evening started with an inspection,
This was followed by the patrols working round 5 bases.

The bases were as follows.

2. Fire Lighting
3. Map and Compass
4. Scout Quiz
5. Team Building

To finish off they had to try and remember 25 items in a Kim's game.

The final results were as follows.

4th - 13th Rosyth
3rd - 68th Inverkeithing
2nd - 48th Donibristle

and the winners were the 41st rosyth.

Congratulations to them and well done to all that took part.

On Sunday 20th Feb it was the turn of the Scouts to hold their 5 a side football competition.

This event was held over from last year when it was cancelled from the bad weather.

We only had 2 troops turn up to the competition.
They were the 13th Rosyth and the 68th Inverkeithing.

Even though the two teams got into the event and played a best of three games competition.

The 68th won the first two games and so they decided to mix the teams up for the third and final game.

Scouts asked to name a shark!

Deep Sea World in North Queensferry is offering Scouts in Scotland the unique opportunity to pick a name for their latest arrival; a male Sand Tiger shark.

The shark arrives from Dingle in the Republic of Ireland at the start of March and Deep Sea World would like to decide on a name for the shark by which it will be known by to the aquarium staff that care for him and the thousands of visitors who will come to see him.

The name of the Sand Tiger shark will be revealed on the same day in the mid-March that it is due to be released into the large sea water aquarium. This event that is expected to be filmed live by BBC’s The One Show featuring Miranda Krestovnikoff.
A number of young people from the Colony, Pack, Troop or Unit who suggest the chosen name will have the opportunity to be there to see the Sand Tiger shark being released and be filmed live by BBC (see below for details).

What do you have to do?
Suggestions for names should be emailed to terry@scouts-scotland.org.uk
by Tuesday 22nd February 2010 along with a brief paragraph telling us why you have chosen the name. The name of the Scout and the Section or Group to whom they belong and contact details for the Scout’s leader should also be provided.

Please note that the name should ideally bear reference to Scouting to allow Scouts from across Scotland and also members of the public to recognise the male Sand Tiger shark as having been named by us; however you can otherwise be as creative as you like!

Please note:
The welfare and well-being of the shark will ultimately dictate when the shark will be released and should a decision be taken by Deep Sea World to release the Sand Tiger shark early or at short notice, it may not be possible for either BBC’s The One Show to film or for Scouts to be present at the release.
In this circumstance, an alternative arrangement will be made for young people from the winning Colony, Pack, Troop or Unit to visit Deep Sea World and the shark that they have named.

Over the weekend 4th – 6th February it was the Young Leaders Training weekend which was held just north of Dundee.
Rosyth District had 6 Explorers taken part (Some just starting and others finishing off their training)
Over the weekend they took part in the following training modules.

Game on – Learning how to teach and run games.

Taking the lead – Leadership skills.

Programme plans and Programme Plans Plus – How to plan sectional programmes and also how to plan monthly and yearly calendars.

First Aid.

What's going on!!

Well i will begin my last diary for 2010 with wishing everyone a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

I missed out what i had done in November so this is a double monthly report.

I kicked off November by attending the Region's gapp weekend which was held at Fordell Firs.
The Explorers learnt new skills on fair trade and hopefully they can take this back to teach the younger sections.
We swiftly moved on to the Scouts Safety competition in which the 41st Scouts won for a second year.

We also had the cubs 5 a side football competition in which the 13th Rosyth cubs won for the 3rd year running.
We had to postpone the Scouts night as the weather was too bad.
I had the privilege of attending the 77th Kelty's first birthday party and presented 4 Beavers and 7 Cubs with their Chief Scout Awards.
I then attended the District Exec Meeting.

I also attended the 13th Rosyth's agm in which i presented several Chief Scout Awards to Cubs and also Explorer Scouts.

I attended the Inch Fellowship's agm and presented Eileen Bull with her 30 year service award.
Once all the formalities were completed i ran a quiz for the group.

December was a bit quieter with all the bad weather we had but i still managed to go to the 48th St David's troop night in which Robyn Davies was presented with her Chief Scout Gold Award.
Also that night Alan Reddington got his 5 year service award.

We finished off the year with the District Carol service held in the 48th Scout Hall.
During the night Paul Walker(48th Donibristle Scouts) was awarded with his 5 year service award.

With the past year now at a close i would like to think everyone for making the past year so memorable,
I just report back on what has been achieved in the district and without all the hard work by everyone i would have nothing to report.
So hopefully 2011 can be as good as 2010.

When the weather was really bad.
It did not stop approx 100 turning up at Dalgety Bay Scout hall to take part in this years Carol service.
During the night in which we sang some well know carols.
Paul Walker from Dalgety Bay got presented with his 5 year service award.

At the end of the evening there was mince pies and refreshments for everyone to enjoy.

On Sunday 21st November,
4 Cub Packs turned up to take part in the District 5 a side competition.
They were from the

13th Rosyth
46th Cowdenbeath
66th Aberdour and the 48th Donibristle pack from Dalgety Bay

They played each other in a round robin format and the winner who were undefeated were the 13th Rosyth.

The Explorers trophy went to the 48th Dalgety Bay.

We tried to run the Scouts on the 28th November but had to call it off due to the bad weather(Snow)

On Tuesday 9th November.
It was was the scouts safety competition.
It was held at the 48th Dalgety Bay scout hall.
5 troops turned up to take part.

They had to work their way round 7 bases which were being marked and judged by the Inch Fellowship.

The bases that tested their safety skills were as follows.

Camp Hygiene
and First Aid.

The results were as follows.

5th - 48th Donibristle Troop - 93 points

How busy have i been

I missed out September's events so this is a double month report.
Here is what i have been up to since the 1st September.

I have attend lots of meetings.

The Regional DC's Meeting
Two Inch Fellowship meetings in which Fellowship members from the Inch and 41st Fellowships completed their Module 1 training
I also have had a meetings with our DESC and ADC Adult Training.

I have visited the 48th Father and child camp and also the 46th Parent and child camp.
Also i went to visit the 77th beavers during their sleepover in the hall,
Last camping visit was to the 41st Explorers who had a Halloween themed weekend.

I was privileged to be invited to present a Chief Scout Gold award to a cub from the 77th
I also attended the Investiture of the whole new scout Troop in Kelty (77th)

To finish off i attend the Young leaders Training weekend at Badaguish where three of our YL's were attending.

On a personal note i attended the Duke of Edinburgh Expedition accreditation weekend at Fordell so i can continue to credit the DOE.

Jamboree On The Air Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 October 2010

It is approaching the time of the year when Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) is taking place. If you have not heard of this event, read on. JOTA is an opportunity to talk to Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Brownies and Guides from around the UK, Europe and even further afield if the conditions are right.

The Kingdom Amateur Radio Society (KARS) will be setting up radio stations at Fordell Firs. There will be an opportunity to use radio equipment, take part in a radio controlled treasure hunt, use the Morse code, learn something about radio, and possibly make a simple radio. For those interested in computers, there will be an opportunity to participate in Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI), communicating by computer to other like minded young people.
At the same time as having fun at this event, it will be possible to complete work towards the Communicators Activity Badge (for Cubs, Scouts and Explorers).

Where is this event to be held
Fordell Firs National Activity Centre, first contact should be made at the Wardens office.

Date and time
Saturday 16 October and Sunday 17 October 2010, between 9.00am and 4.00pm each day.

Who can come

Police in the Community Programme 2010

Police in the Community Programme 2010

Fife Police announced the dates for the 2010 Police in the Community Programme.

The course that was run last year at Carnegie College was a great success with members of the community from 16-80 years attending over the 6 weeks.

This year it will be held at Inverkeithing High School.

Participants experience some of the highlights of police training and are exposed to the operations of Fife Constabulary.

Said Inspector Mitchell,

"I am delighted that we have been able to run the programme in the South West Fife Area. It proved very successful last year with 32 students 'graduating'. This year reflects the feedback from those students.

It is an excellent opportunity for the community, in an informal setting, to come along and find out what we do and why we do it. Many of the previous students used the experience in their own lives, jobs, school, study, development and personal interests, which is what being there for the community is all about.

The programme is facilitated by Police Officers and staff and there is no cost to the student attending. I am sure it will be as successful as last year".

The programme is on Monday evenings and starts on 1st November 2010 and runs through to Monday 7th December from 1830 hrs - 2030 hrs at Inverkeithing High School.

Closing date for applications is MONDAY 4TH OCTOBER 2010

SHQ has been given the opportunity to give away 50 free tickets (normal price £15 per ticket) for an illustrated lecture being given by Sir Chris Bonington, one of Britain’s most famous mountaineers, at the Alhambra Theatre in Dunfermline on Friday 24th September.

Free tickets for the event are available for young people from the Explorer age range and upwards and accompanying adults. These are available in 5 batches of 10 on a first come, first served basis. Sir Chris Bonington has taken part in nineteen expeditions to the Himalayas including four to Everest and the first ever ascent of Annapurna. A professional mountaineer and explorer, his varied career has also included hunting for caribou with Eskimos on Baffin Island and climbing the highest active volcano in the world.
As an adventure journalist and photographer, he also accompanied an army expedition led by Captain John Blashford-Snell on the first ever descent of the Blue Nile. In the autumn of 1975 he led the British Everest expedition to the summit of Everest.
Sir Chris will be sharing these and other highlights of his mountaineering life to what is expected to be a large appreciative audience in Dunfermline and will cover a number of important anniversary events including:

50th Anniversary of his first ascent of Annapurna II
40th Anniversary of his 1st ascent South Face of Annapurna
35th Anniversary of his 1st ascent South West Face of Everest
25th Anniversary of his ascent of Everest

Keith Brown MSP launches Managing Together
The Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning launched 'Managing Together' at the Scottish Police College at Tulliallan at the end of last month. This is a programme of learning to support senior volunteer leaders and managers in the four uniformed voluntary youth organisations in Scotland.

Membership Subscription
Following discussion at its recent meeting, the Scottish Board is recommending to the Scottish Council that the 2011 membership subscription be set at £20.25, with a 50p rebate for prompt payment. This is in line with the subscription rate that will apply elsewhere in the UK.

Axis 2010 - Saturday 6th November 2010
Registration forms for this event, which will incorporate the 100th AGM of the Scottish Council, should be returned to SHQ by Friday 8th October. Forms are also included with the current edition of Pathfinder - unfortunately a printing error resulted in a batch of these forms not carrying the date of the event, which we can confirm is Saturday 6th November. Professional Instructor Training at Lochgoilhead

Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme Training
A DofE Expedition Assessor training course and an Introduction to the DofE Award training course will be taking place on 9th and 10th October at Scottish Headquarters. These are aimed at any adult in Scouting who is involved, or would like to be involved, in running the DofE Award Scheme as part of their Balanced Programme.

Now that the summer is nearly over it is time to look back at what i did over the past two months.

I started by visiting the 77th Beavers and Cubs at their weekend camp.
The weather was really bad but this did not stop the group having a great time.

I attended a meeting with other members from the region to started the process of choosing a new regional commissioner.

Craig Miller had his 5 year service certificate presented at flag break on a Sunday morning at Fordell Firs.

I held an ADC meeting in which we started to plan out the forth coming year.

I attended the explorer national camp where i was there helping with the Inch fellowship doing the catering for 150.

To finish off the summer i helped the Inch fellowship pack the latest edition of the pathfinder magazine.

Kids Say Slow Down - Road Safety Week 2010

Scout Groups are being encouraged to get involved in Road Safety Week 2010, whose theme this year is ‘Kids Say Slow Down’.

Groups can get involved in promoting and improving road safety in their community, as well as fundraising for Brake, a charity which provides services for road crash victims and campaigns for road safety in schools, colleges, companies and the media.

With the Summer here the groups are doing more and more outdoors.
I am kept as busy as ever.
Here is what i got up to during June.

I invested Stuart Hamilton from the 13th Rosyth Cubs.
It was our District AGM on the 2nd June and Hazel Dewar got presented with her Wood Badge.

I attended the Blair Atholl training weekend and this also tied in with the Module 16 nights away training weekend.
The district had 5 leaders attend the course.

I visited the 13th Cubs,68th Cubs and the 41st Beavers while they were on camp.

I went and attended the regional AGM which this year was held up in Perth.We had a presentation from the a group of scouts and explorers who had been on a Jamboree in Denmark.

With most sections closing down for the summer hopefully it will be a quiet time for me.

CashBack for Kelty

A New Start for the 77th Fife (Kelty) Scout Group

Round 1 of the new CashBack for Communities Small Grants Scheme has now closed.
The response received by the 1st June deadline has hugely exceeded expectations of the 6 partner organisations. Almost 180 applications were received, seeking funding of almost £275,000 (and many more were received after the closing date!). This is more than the entire sum available for Year 1 and has necessitated some difficult decisions for the organisations concerned. A strict application of the rules and priorities of the fund will inevitably disappoint some.

Kenny McAskill MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Justice, presented the first Start-up Grant to the 77th Fife (Kelty) Scout Group during the Scottish Scouts Annual Award Ceremony held at Hampden Park on 13th June. The Group was restarted in late 2009 with the help of Rosyth District, having been dormant for 5 years. It currently has Beavers and Cubs and intends starting a Scout Troop in August. Two of the Cubs, Sarah and Calum, who will join the new Troop after the summer, received a cheque for £1,000 from Kenny McAskill, which will be used to buy camping equipment. Neither has camped under canvas before and both are looking forward to being in Scouts and enjoying ‘real camping’.

Kenny McAskill said:

“Scouting is a very valuable local activity that offers young people the opportunity to make a positive contribution to their. It is fitting that a Scout Troop from Fife is the first to benefit from this new grants project given that I launched this scheme at the end of March just a few miles away from Kelty, at Fordell Firs.

“The creation of this new Scout Troop using cash seized from crooks is exactly what CashBack is all about. CashBack aims to redress the balance, to put criminals’ money back into the communities that they have taken from in the first place. Many of our communities have been scarred by criminal activity and CashBack is the Scottish Government’s way of giving them hope and aspirations for the future. The creation of the 77th Fife Scouts Group is clear evidence of the bad guys’ money being put into good ideas with a long term future.”

With the year whizzing past.
This months diary was like the ones before(Busy)

I went and presented Alison Pollock(77th)with her 5 Year Service award.
I Invested David Sinclair(13th).
We had our District Sports Day - which was held at Pitreavie Sports Ground.
Well done to all the took part in the day and also to the winners.

Beavers - 66th Aberdour
Cubs - 46th Cowdenbeath
Scouts - 46th Cowdenbeath
Explorers - 48th Dalgety Bay and 68th Inverkeithing joint winners.

And the group trophy went to the 66th Aberdour.

I attend the Inch fellowship meeting which was held in Crossgates

We had a Regional meeting held Perth. This was attended by the 10 DC's from the region and the development plans were discussed.

with the weather getting better i visited the 48th Donibristle Scouts at their survival camp.
I also visited the 48th Cubs Mother and Cub Camp and also the 66th Cubs Father and Cub Camp both held at Fordell Firs.

Youth Summit 2

Scottish Headquarters
are looking for Explorer Scouts and Scout Networkers from all of the Districts in Scotland to take part in what has become known as Youth Summit 2. An event being held at Tulliallan Police College between Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June 2010.

The event is an opportunity to take part in a series of fun activities and workshops that range from the unusual to the outright strange but all with the objective of hearing your voice and giving you the opportunity to set the direction for Scouting on Scotland over the next 3 years including programme, communication, diversity and youth empowerment to name a few!

The evening will be lots of fun with surf simulators, bucking broncos, wii games, hovercraft madness and art attack!

The weekend is a full residential experience and is heavily subsidised by headquarters. The cost per person has been restricted to £20 although you may be able to seek financial support from your unit.

The deadline for applications is Monday 7th June; however places are limited to 120 with over half having been secured by the time of sending this e-mail so if you would like to be considered, please reply to - at terryoneill2003@yahoo.co.uk - sooner rather than later so that I can get the application form to you?

Bosnia

Two of our Leaders from the District are going to bosnia.

I have enclosed some info regarding what they are planning on doing.

Brian and June Miller are planning a return trip to Bosnia with International Fire and Rescue (IFRA).

The main aim of the mission is to train firefighters in using breathing apparatus, and in First Aid skills.

We also plan to visit the local village school, which is somewhat deprived.
It would be great if you could help us with our 'mini' venture - Pencil Case Appeal.
That is to donate pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers, pens and pencil cases to give to each of the children within the local school. Kevin also gave me an idea to take out some solar powered calculators.
You may be able to help as a whole group, or an individual section. Any donations would be greatfully received, prior to breaking up for the Summer Holidays.
A photograph would be a bonus to take out with us, to show the Bosnian children who donated these items, but is optional.

Another idea that crossed my mind was that Cubs may want to write or Beavers draw a picture to exchange (similar to having a penpal).

For National Grid, the largest utility provider in the UK, safety is a key issue. Helping young people become aware of simple measures they can take to be safe in and around their homes is a great place to start.

We all take our domestic electricity, gas and water supply for granted, but not everyone is sure of what to do if there is an emergency, the lights go out or if there is a gas leak.

District Sports Day

It was Saturday 15th May.
The sun was shinning.
This was not meant to happen.
It was the District Sports Day.
The Field Activities for the Cubs , Scouts and Explorers were run in the morning.

The beavers turned up at 12 to take part in their sports day and this was followed by the track events in the afternoon.

Over all it was a good day and the winners of the different trophies were as follows.

Beavers was won by the 66th Aberdour
Cubs was won by the 46th Cowdenbeath
Scouts was won by the 46th Cowdenbeath.
The Group Trophy was won by the 66th Aberdour

The Explorer trophy was won by both the 48th Dalgety Bay and the 68th Inverkeithing.

I would like to thank everyone who turned up and also everyone who help to run the day!!!

Shelter Box Scavenger Hunt

Scouts prepared for ShelterBox scavenge in stunning surrounds

ShelterBox will be putting super Scouts from around the country to the test against the stunning backdrop of Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh.

International disaster relief charity ShelterBox is calling on Scouts to be prepared to go the extra mile and make sure the charity’s Big Green Box Week ends with a bang. On Saturday, June 19 the ShelterBox Scavenger Hunt will be taking place in Edinburgh and will see hundreds of Scouts navigate their way through the city by decoding a series of clues, armed with the charity’s iconic, big green boxes.

The ShelterBoxes are usually found in disaster zones around the world. Each box typically contains a 10-person disaster relief tent, blankets, kitchen sets, a stove, water purification and storage equipment, basic tools, a children’s activity back and other vital items.

ShelterBox has been partnered with the Scout Association since 2009 and the ShelterBox Scavenger Hunt promises to be a fantastic opportunity for Scouts to learn more about disaster relief as well as having a great day out.

James Webb, ShelterBox Scout Coordinator, said: ‘The ShelterBox Scavenger Hunt will be a great adventure for Scouts of all ages. They’ll be put under some challenging demands carrying an empty ShelterBox and using their navigation skills to trek across Edinburgh. I hope many Scouts will take up the opportunity and put their Scouting skills to the test.’

The start and finish will be from a central location which will remain a mystery until nearer the date and there will be a selection of fantastic prizes for the winning teams. Each team should be made up of a Scout Leader and three to five Cubs, Scouts or Explorers.

Places are limited so any groups wishing to take part should register quickly by e-mailing youngshelterbox@shelterbox.org.
The Scavenger Hunt will mark the end of ShelterBox’s Big Green Box Week, a week full of fundraising up and down the country.
People who cannot make the Scavenger Hunt are being urged to get involved in the many other events ShelterBox is holding. Further information is available from www.youngshelterbox.org.

Scouts around the world have already helped ShelterBox in a number of disaster zones. Most recently, Scouts in Haiti assisted with the distribution of hundreds of ShelterBoxes in Port au Prince after the catastrophic earthquake in January.

Here we are again,
At the end of another busy month.
Here's what i have been up to.

I have been and invested a few people during the month.

Had a meeting with the Adc's to arrange the forthcoming sports day in May.

I attended the Blair Atholl training weekend at Fordell Firs(The district has two explorers attending this event)
During this weekend i also visited the 41st Scouts who were camping there for the weekend.

I attended the Inch Fellowship meeting which was held at the 68th Inverkeithing hall.

The main activity of the month was our district's St George's weekend camp.
This was held at Fordell Firs and we had close on 150 cubs/scouts/explorers camping for the weekend with over another50 beavers coming up on the Sunday for our service.

St George's Weekend

Over the weekend 23rd to 25th April the district held it's St George's Day weekend camp.
It was held at Fordell Firs.
Over 120 Cubs/Scouts/Explorers and Leaders spent the weekend together.
The members had lots of activities to do over the weekend.
Some of them are as follows.

and a trip to the Stock Cars.
this is to name but a few.

On the Sunday Beavers from the district joined us and they had several bases to work round.

On the Sunday we held our service and renewed our promises.
